I hope that one and all had a great New Year. For me, it was quiet and I had much time for reflection. I was asked a question over the break about the thing that I did the best. So, I thought I would tell you about it and a bit about how I do it.
One of the things that I have been able to do very well is to walk into situations and change them for the better. This will be my focus. This will be an arc about Leadership and Strategy and some about situational awareness. This is also a story that applies directly to Sales and Marketing. These same skills apply to working with customers, particularly new ones.
The various chapters will begin next Monday, but I do want to spend some time on a topic that is related to this. Success walking into something brand new is a trimuph of confidence in oneself. That does not mean that I knew more or even as much than others involved. In fact, I have at times had to lead groups that I knew little about. But in all of this confidence shown through as a trait that I think is so important.
The first manifestation is internal. You have to believe in yourself. That means, I think I can walk into any business situation and contribute. My contributions might be small compared to others. But I believe I can help. As with any similar situation, that internal voice can lead to success or failure. If you don’t believe that you can win, you won’t win. We hear it from athletes all the time and it turns out to be true.
The second manifestation is external. Your confidence will show to others and allow them to place some amount of faith in you. They will give you the right to succeed in their eyes or the benefit of the doubt. When you first step in, they won’t know what to think. You have to give them a reason to believe in you. The first thing you can do is act like a winner.
All of this is a balancing act. The line between confidence and arrogance can be a fine one to walk. The key is listening. Some number of the people will reach out to you at the start. If you really listen to them, they will see that you are looking for advice. Taking their thoughts into consideration. It does not mean that you need to react to the first thing that you hear. It does mean that you should take any input from people seriously. So, next week we will walk into a new environment and make ourselves winners.
